Students with water filter A wave of awareness for access to fresh water is growing at Bardstown Elementary School.

Recently, fourth-graders at BES have been learning about the challenges faced by children in Africa. This month Mrs. Mudd and Mrs. Greer’s classes read The Water Princess. The Water Princess is a story about a little girl named Gie Gie who lived in a village in Africa. Every morning Gie Gie and her mother had to wake up very early to walk for miles and miles, standing in long lines in the hot sun, to get clean water for their family. After reading the story, Mr. Ron Wilson, a volunteer with Baptist Global Relief, visited students to share his experiences in Africa with finding solutions to the water crisis. During his visit Mr. Wilson brought several examples of terracotta pots that organization uses as water filters.

Inspired by Gie Gie’s story, the students wanted to give more children access to clean water. They’ve been raising money to purchase water filters. So far, they’ve collected $316 to purchase 12 water filters. Each water filter will provide clean water for a family of six for an entire year.

Way to go, tigers!
