Student experience flight simulator.
Students at Bardstown High School are flying high after taking simulated missions, building model rockets and engaging in other fun STEM activities at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

On May 13th, twenty-five ninth grade students returned from the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama after attending the Pathfinder Program.

The three-day, two-night camp is an immersive program that allows students to learn the history of space travel through museum artifacts and simulators. Students have an opportunity to walk among real, full-size rockets and even participate in space simulators.

Several students returned with a clear career path in mind.

“Space camp was the perfect place for me to explore possible careers,” said Destiny Price. “I’ve always had a pull towards space and as a kid I had a Neil Armstrong poster in my room.”

Destiny liked space camp so much that she now wants to build a future career as a chemical engineer on the International Space Station (ISS).

“During our mission I was the station commander,” said Price. “Working on ISS would allow me to work with my hands and help people while doing something I love.”

Freshman Gabriel Nunnally signed up for the Pathfinder Program because he has aspirations to be an aerospace engineer for rockets or jets.

“I went to space camp to try and learn something about the industry,” said Nunnally.

He found that in their group simulated mission.

“The mission challenged us to work together and communicate to reach our goal of delivering a pay load to ISS,” said Nunnally. “Each of us became astronauts and were assigned a role at the spaceship, mission control or ISS.”

The Pathfinder Program is an annual trip led by Mrs. Boggs and Mrs. Hines, both science teachers at Bardstown High School. Every year, all ninth graders an invited to join Mrs. Boggs and Mrs. Hines on the 4 and ½ hour drive to Huntsville.
