2017 Jennifer Lynn Gaddie Grant Recipients Named

Maggie (on the left) and Abby Downs, rising seniors at Bardstown High School, have been named recipients of the 2017 Jenny Gaddie Grant for Arts Education.

With the grant, the Downs’ will attend a one-week Summer Art Workshop at Murray State University. The workshop will include multiple mediums of art including drawing, printmaking, woodcarving, film animation, and art history.

While both girls love working with chalk pastels, they are looking forward to broadening their art skills at the camp through experiences with new art forms. They will be taking AP Art at Bardstown High School as seniors and have already begun planning and working on their portfolios for the class. They also plan to pursue art instruction in college and make it a part of their professional lives after college.

The Jennifer Lynn Gaddie Grant for Arts Education was started in 2007 to assist Bardstown High School students who excel and have proven artistic abilities in the areas of music, dance, theatre, creative writing, graphic or visual arts, or multi-media production and demonstrate a commitment to their art form. It is designed to financially assist students in their pursuit of further training in their chosen arts field. Candidates for the grant complete an application and go through an extensive interview process with a selection committee, including a performance or demonstration of their art form.

The grant was established in memory of Jennifer Gaddie who, at a young age, loved ceramics, clothing design, drawing and music. Unfortunately, Jenny’s love of the arts didn’t have an opportunity to fully blossom as she passed away at the age of fifteen after an eighteen-month battle with cancer. She was a sophomore at Bardstown High School and would have graduated in 1989.

The grant is sponsored by Patricia and Thomas Hart, Jenny’s mother and step-father, and Matthew L. Gaddie, Jenny’s brother and 1999 graduate of Bardstown High School and a local professional artist. The grant is coordinated and administered through the Bardstown Foundation for Excellence in Public Education.

Abby and Maggie are the daughters of Vincent and Rose Ann Lucas Downs.
