Bardstown City Schools celebrated the start of construction for the new Bardstown Elementary School (BES) with a ceremonial ground breaking event on August 4, 2020. The new 80,000-square-foot facility will be located at 1345 Templin Avenue and will house 850 students in grades second through fifth.

The District selected Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects as the architectural firm and Codell Construction as the Construction Manager. While the outside of the new facility embodies the century old traditions Sherman Carter Barnhart also managed to capture BCS’s innovative spirit. Their design will make Bardstown Elementary School Kentucky’s first zero-energy emerging, disaster-resilient public school. The school building will be built with energy efficient walls, roof and feature a solar array to help offset energy consumption during the school day. These features will make this building much less expensive to operate, freeing up funds to support students in other positive ways.

"At Bardstown City Schools our vibrant diverse community of students, educators and staff continuously look for innovative opportunities. They seek out challenges and they relentlessly strive for excellence," said Dr. Ryan Clark, superintendent for Bardstown City Schools. "Today, we are breaking ground to build an exceptional facility to match the exceptional teaching of our educators and the exceptional achievements of our students."

Set to open in 2021, the new BES allows each grade to be organized as a pod, with classrooms surrounding a flexible learning resource area. Second and third grades are located on the first floor, with the third, fourth, and fifth grades on the second floor. The new facility will include a flexible commons area featuring a social stair, a “recreational” slide, and a movie screen as well as a media center, gymnasium, stage, wireless computer lab, maker space and more.

Event speakers include Bardstown City Schools Superintendent Dr. Ryan P. Clark, Bardstown Elementary School Principal Brian Courtney and Architect Jennifer Cash. Guests of honor include members of the Bardstown City Schools Board of Education, 14th District State Senator Jimmy Higdon and 50th District State Representative Chad McCoy.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Ground Breaking Ceremony. We had a wonderful morning celebrating the start of construction for our new elementary school.
