COACH GARNIS MARTIN

Coach Martin served Bardstown High School as athletic director and coach for 37 years. During that time he was the school’s football coach (1952 – 1989), basketball coach (1953 – 1978), track coach (1955 – 1973), and baseball coach (1953 – 1959). He taught Driver’s Education, Physical Education, and Health. His coaching accomplishments included 269 wins, 98 losses, and 7 ties in football. His teams won 12 Mid-Kentucky Conference titles, reached the playoffs 15 times winning 11 district championships, 7 regional championships, 1 Class A State Runner-up, 2 Class A State Championships, and 1 Class AA State Championship. In addition, he coached 6 regular season undefeated teams. In basketball Coach Martin had a record of 225 wins and 179 losses including 2 Fifth Region titles (1969 and 1971). In track, his teams won 5 regional titles and 2 Class A State Championships (1970 and 1971).

Coach Martin won state and national acclaim for his exploits in football. He was State Class A Coach of the Year in 1968 and State Class AA Coach of the Year in 1976 and 1981. He was the statewide Kentucky Coach of the Year for football in 1977. He was the National High School Coaches Association football Coach of the Year for Region III in 1986.

In addition to his state and national acclaim, he was named recipient of the Happy Chandler Award for contributions to Kentucky high school football, the State Distinguished Service Award for football, member of the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame, and a charter member of Dawahare’s Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. He was named Bardstown Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1968 and received the Distinguished Service Award NFICA, Section II in 1988.

Coach Martin retired as the head coach with the most wins in Kentucky High School football.
